What is a coach?
A coach can be defined as a friend with purpose who offers practical support and coaching towards life goals. Coaches are similar to mentors but are more focused on goal-setting.
What qualities or skills do I need?
A volunteer Coach is a challenging but very reward way to directly benefit the most needy in your community. It does not require any specialist skill but does require character to be effective. Having a resilient and positive character is much neglected today but is vital to coaching and mentoring a vulnerable person. Many characteristics or qualities of a coach are important but the most vital are those of grace and persistence.
Can you offer grace to vulnerable young person or adult? Are you able to stay the course even if they are difficult? If so, you may make a great community coach?
What time commitment must I offer?
A coach is required to give up on average 2 hours per week for a minimum commitment of 12 months, including initial training and ongoing support.
Will I be checked?
You will be expected to have a Criminal Records Bureau Check conducted against you plus supply at least two references.
What training and support will be offered?
You will be expected to attend an intial 16 hour training programme plus monthly support groups. Both are a requisite of the role. Initial training covers an introduction to coaching, boundaries and risk, understanding your community and communication skills. On going support offers mutual supervision and support plus understanding issues such as dealing with addictions and mental health.
How will volunteering as a coach benefit the community?
Coaching has been shown to significantly benefit vulnerable people emotionally, socially and spiritually. Your involved will directly benefit an individual but will could also benefit the community in terms of reduced welfare dependency, less family violence and crime.
How will volunteering as a coach benefit me?
Although it can be a challenge, coaching is also great fun and very rewarding. You get to meet and know someone who is perhaps quite different from you and there is the opportunity to see them grow and flourish.
